Origins and uses

Small aromatic labiatae both condiment and medicinal, savory resembles hyssop and thyme. They are characterized by narrow, toothless leaves with a pink or white corolla. Garden savory "satureia hortensia" is a small plant with nothing to catch the eye. Its leaves, a few millimeters wide, give off a powerful peppery and spicy scent that is very popular in the kitchen. Of Mediterranean origin, it seems to have first been cultivated in Italy.
